Innovation in Biopharmaceutical Process Development and Manufacturing

Résumés of the Course Leaders

E. Coen Beuvery PhD is a consultant, specialized in process development of biopharmaceuticals and validation of their processes. At this moment he is doing the coordination of a project dealing with 'real time product release' of harvests from the upstream part (cultivation steps) of production processes based upon the use of prokaryotic cells. The approach of the project rests on the PAT guidance document issued in 2004 by FDA. Additional information about Coen can be obtained from: http://www.pat-consultancy.com.

José Coco-Marin PhD has more than 15 years experience in biopharmaceutical process development and production. He is currently responsible for research and development with respect to vaccines and biopharmaceuticals at the Animal Sciences Group (ASG), Wageningen UR. This includes defining the strategic direction and ensuring the integrity of R&D programs. Before joining the ASG, he was responsible for technology development and business innovation with respect to Mammalian Cell Technology at DSM Biologics. Previously, he was senior scientist at DSM Biologics, and responsible for mammalian cell culture technology, including small-scale process development to cGMP manufacturing of several biopharmaceutical proteins. José holds a PhD in mammalian cell culture technology.

Dirk Martens PhD, is assistant professor at food- and bio-process engineering group of Wageningen University. His research focuses on optimization of production processes for biologicals through developing detailed models of cell physiology (cell cycle, apoptosis) and metabolism (metabolic network models). For data generation, different cultivation strategies are used and developed like the chemostat, acceleration stat and bioreactors in series. Topics studied are hybridoma cell physiology, the baculo virus expression system, bacterial vaccines and in vitro toxiclogy. Additional information about Dirk can be obtained from:

Ton van Boxtel PhD is assistant professor in the Systems and Control Group of Wageningen University. His challenge is to develop knowledge based controlled systems to maintain quality in biological systems. The development of such systems starts with modeling. White models, based on the underlying mechanisms are preferred, but if knowledge is insufficient fuzzy and statistical models are used as well. Models are applied for software sensor systems, advanced control, and optimization. Moreover, interactive links are made between process and product design with control. Currently, he works on the development of active controls strategies to realize PAT during the cultivation of micro-organisms for the preparation of biologicals.
